When Emotions Become Symptoms: Why Willpower Isn’t Enough

So many women come to me saying, “I don’t know what happened. I know I'm getting older, but I'm just so tired all the time, my extra weight won't come off, and nothing I try seems to work.”
They get a little frustrated when I start asking questions about emotions and relationships. What does that have to do with sleep and mood? Many chronic health struggles are rooted in emotions. Not emotions in the sense of “thinking too negatively” or “not trying hard enough,” but deep emotional events that altered the body’s chemistry years ago.
Sometimes the trigger is so far back in history that the event itself now seems inconsequential. But the body remembers. That disruption may have altered how nutrients are absorbed or utilized, triggering a chain reaction. Over time, function was compromised. And eventually, symptoms began to appear.
The original trigger could even have been something that seemed minor at the time, like an antibiotic for a childhood illness that disrupted the gut, or a reaction to a vaccine that unsettled the body. All sorts of things that look small in the moment can initiate a spiral when the body can’t fully recover.

Now the fatigue or stubborn weight feels like the problem. Yet frustration at not being able to correct it adds stress. That stress further shifts the body’s chemistry. Before long, physical symptoms and emotions are feeding each other in a spiral that feels impossible to stop.
These emotions are not just "in your head." And they cannot be managed by willpower alone. They are chemical combinations within the body itself.
Where Healing Starts
This is why I start with a full assessment and lots of questions that may seem odd. When your body doesn’t have the raw materials it needs, no amount of determination will carry you forward. Nutritional supplements can be a powerful tool here, helping to restore balance without requiring sheer willpower to force a whole new diet overnight.

As balance begins to return, both the emotions and the physical symptoms start to lift. Sometimes I also use supplements aimed more directly at the emotions when that’s the biggest challenge. The beautiful thing is that any point on the spiral can be a starting place for change.
