Often the trail marker of symptoms isn't clear.
Often the trail marker of symptoms isn't clear.

When Sarah noticed an angry, red rash spreading across her arms, she panicked. It was itchy, inflamed, and getting worse by the hour. She’d just started a highly regarded detox program to improve her health and hadn’t expected this. Desperate for relief, she applied cream, but it didn’t help. A visit to her doctor left her feeling even more frustrated; he dismissed the detox program as ill-advised and prescribed a steroid. While the medication temporarily calmed the rash, it returned the moment she stopped taking it.

“What’s going on?” she wondered. Scared and uncertain, Sarah called me.

Rather than focusing solely on the rash, we looked deeper. External symptoms often signal an internal imbalance. In Sarah’s case, her skin was working overtime to excrete toxins that her liver couldn’t manage. When the liver is overloaded, the body finds alternative pathways to detoxify—and the skin, as a major organ of elimination, steps in. Applying creams to suppress the rash only blocks this process, forcing the body to find other, often more disruptive, ways to release toxins.

Sarah’s original goal was to exude vibrant health. Instead of seeing the rash as a setback, we reframed it as a signpost, pointing us toward the next step in her healing journey.

I see people like Sarah every day. We’ve been taught to equate symptoms and disease: symptoms are relabeled disease and the eradication of symptoms means the disease is gone. But that’s not necessarily the case. A rash is not always a skin-based problem. Of course, if you came in contact with something ugly, washing your skin would eliminate the body’s reaction. But if washing doesn’t help, you must look for why the body is responding this way. In children, rashes often signal food sensitivities; in adults, the picture is usually a bit more complicated and requires some unraveling.

True healing comes when we work with the body, not against it. Symptoms are not the enemy; they are messengers. When we suppress them without understanding their cause, we interrupt the body’s natural healing process.

Supporting Your Body’s Natural Healing Process

It’s tempting to jump into a trendy 7-day juice fast or a “3 Months to Bikini Ready” exercise plan at the start of the year. While I’m a fan of resolutions, they need to align with your body’s current needs. Diving headlong into detox or overloading the body with intense exercise can lead to discomfort and, in some cases, setbacks. A juice fast in January when your body is struggling to keep warm is a recipe for failure on many levels. Keep in mind that anytime you start something new and immediately get sick it’s not a coincidence. Your new routine has triggered the body to release stored junk in order to accomplish your desired goal. Keep going, and consider adding one (or more) of the following to nourish and support the body’s healing process:

  1. Skin Brushing

    • Gently stimulate lymphatic drainage with daily dry brushing to help your body eliminate toxins.

  2. Exercise

    • Prioritize moderate, consistent movement, such as walking. Deep breathing oxygenates your cells and carries out many toxins. Ecotherapy—spending time in nature—offers both physical and mental benefits.

  3. Sunshine

    • Aim for regular exposure to natural sunlight to boost vitamin D levels and enhance overall health.

  4. Hydration

    • Water is essential for every function in the body, especially detoxification. Aim for 1/2 your bodyweight in oz (e.g., if you weigh 150 lbs, you need 75 oz of pure water.)

  5. Sleep

    • Sleep is when your body repairs and regenerates itself. Ensure your body has enough downtime.

  6. Nutrient-Dense Foods

    • Focus on whole, organic foods rich in essential vitamins and minerals to fuel your body’s healing work.

  7. Epsom Salt Baths

    • Soak in a warm bath with Epsom salts to provide magnesium, support detoxification, and relax your muscles.

By taking these steps, you can encourage your body to heal naturally, at its own pace, and in its own way. Remember, vibrant health is not something we force; it’s something we nurture. For next-level of healing, we can add:

  1. Homeopathy

    • Carefully selected homeopathic remedies to support the body’s full-spectrum healing by gently and effectively opening blocked drainage pathways and addressing underlying imbalances.
